About Matthew

Matthew Gillman is a founder and financing executive with more than a decade of experience helping government contractors and small to mid-sized businesses secure the capital they need to grow. He is a Partner at GillmanBagley, the firm behind GovCon Funding, which funds accounts receivable financing, invoice factoring, and payroll and contract funding directly off its own balance sheet for federal government contractors and B2B companies.

At GillmanBagley, Matthew works alongside co-principal Michael Bagley to serve federal prime and subcontractors with direct-funded working capital solutions, including accounts receivable financing, invoice factoring, and payroll/contract funding, with particular expertise in the mechanics of the Assignment of Claims Act and the financing challenges unique to government contract work. GillmanBagley is a regular exhibitor and sponsor at industry events such as VETS (the GovCon industry conference), where Matthew and the team connect directly with government contractors and industry partners on financing strategy.

Matthew came up on the lending side of the table, where he saw firsthand how often business owners were placed into financing structures that didn't actually fit their needs. That experience shaped his approach: pairing deep underwriting knowledge with a network of bank and alternative lending partners so business owners get matched to the right capital, not just the fastest offer.

Matthew is also the founder of SMB Compass, a brokered lending advisory firm he started in 2017 that has provided over $250 million in financing to small businesses across industries including construction, manufacturing, transportation, landscaping, and restaurants. Earlier in his career he held roles as Managing Director at InterNex Capital and as a senior account manager and team lead at On Deck Capital, giving him operating experience on both the technology-powered lending side and the underwriting, monitoring, and funding side of the business. He has been featured and quoted in outlets including American Express Business Trends & Insights and business.com, and was profiled by the Secured Finance Network (SFNet) as a young professional entrepreneur in the secured lending industry.

Matthew is a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington and is based in the New York metro area. He writes and speaks regularly on small business lending, working capital strategy, and government contract financing.
